Angel Beats! – 02/03

The SSS visit the Guild, a weapons depot for the SSS. The path to the Guild is riddled with anti-Tenshi traps. After informing the team at the Guild of the SSS visit they expect an easy way in. However, they did not get one. Instead, the traps are still active and in order to get to the Guild they must go through each of the traps. The team slowly decrease in number as each member gets caught in the traps. When Otonashi and Yuri are left they rest.

As they rest, Yuri tells Otonashi a bit of her past. She had three younger siblings. One day when her parents were out, burglars raided the house. They threatened to kill her siblings if they did get anything of value from the family. Yuri was given 10 minutes before the first kill. She tries her best but fails. All of her siblings got killed before the cops came.

After telling her story, Otonashi and Yuri set off towards the Guild. When they arrive they find out that Tenshi is extremely close. A decision is made to blow up the Guild and go back to the old location of the Guild. Yuri, Otonashi and they rest of the revived teammates try to defend the Guild from Tenshi until they are able to blow it up. After a short battle with Tenshi, the team manages to destroy the Guild and escape.

-My Song-

Iwasawa performs her new song in from of Yuri. Yuri believes that it isn’t a good song to use as a distraction for the next mission. She then introduces the SSS to someone new: Mr. Christ. Yuri believes that the whole team is stupid and a genius is what is needed for the next mission. She then explains the next mission to the team.

Otonashi decided to roam around for a bit. After buying a can of Key Coffee he heads inside the school to find a girl putting up posters for the next GirlDeMo (Girl Dead Monster) concert. She introduces herself as Yui shortly after being surprised by Otonashi. She says that she’s part of the diversion squad of the SSS and how she admires Iwasawa and GirlDeMo. Otonashi is unable to take the girl’s constant blabbering and leaves.

He goes out and buys another can of coffee. While he’s out he hears someone playing. He finds GirlDeMo practicing for the next concert. After taking some time off, Iwasawa goes outside with Otonashi. While they’re both outside she tells him about her past. Her parents were always fighting. One day she got into music after listening to a band at a music store. This inspires her to play the guitar and continue to play for the future. However, a fight her parents got into affected her. She was hit in the head and suffered a stroke the day after. She was in a state where she could not talk anymore. She soon died.

Back in the school, Tenshi is seen ripping down posters for the GirlDeMo concert. The student around her do not like her decision and continue to argue. She walks away thinking that it makes her look like an enemy. That night, the mission and concert commence. The SSS team break into Tenshi’s “hideout” while GirlDeMo distracts everyone in the school. The concert approaches it’s climax, but is stopped by teachers and Tenshi. One teacher threatens to throw away Iwasawa’s first guitar. She breaks loose a teacher holding her down and grabs the guitar. She then starts to play her new song. After being able to play her song at last, she realizes that that was her goal in life. She then disappears.

Meanwhile, the SSS team discovers some secrets in Tenshi’s computer. The computer holds the list of all the students, as well as stats involving Tenshi and her weapons. Yuri find something interesting: Tenshi makes her own weapons similar to the way the SSS make their weapons. Because of this, she suspects that Tenshi is a normal person as opposed to a NPC.  She then starts to doubt the existence of God due to this.

Angel Beats! – 01

Otonashi wakes up and starts to question where he is. While he is in the middle of thinking a girl asks him if he has finally woken up. He gets up and sees a girl holding a gun. He tries to speak, only to be interrupted by the girl. She introduces him to the “Like-hell-I’m-dead Battlefield,” a world in the afterlife. She explains to him that he is dead and that was why he was there. Otonashi tries to question her about the world, but she asks him if he will enlist and explains everything to him, shows him their enemy, and introduces herself as Yuri.

After a long and drawn out explanation Otonashi goes down to the middle of the track and talks with a girl. He point out that a gun is being aimed at her and that they think she is an Angel. She states that she isn’t an Angel and is merely the Student Council President. Feeling as if he had been tricked he tells her that he’s going to the hospital, to which she responds there is no hospital. She says that there is no hospital because nobody in the world gets gets sick and people do not die. Otonashi thinks that she’s in with Yuri and asked Tenshi (Angel) to prove it. She then stabs him.

Otonashi wakes up in the what looks like a hospital bed screaming because of the incident earlier. He checks for any stab wounds to find nothing there. On the chair next to him he finds his shirt drenched in blood. Startled by it he tries to run out the door, only to be stopped by a person (Noda) holding a large axe. He tells Otonashi that he disrespected “Yurippe” earlier and then proceeds to attack him with a 100-hit combo (Similar to Tomoyo in CLANNAD).
After waking up a second time, this time on the floor he tries to find an adult in this very weird world. He heads to the Principal’s Office and attempts to open the door, only to be hit by a giant hammer swinging down from the ceiling.

After waking up a THIRD time he finds himself in a room filled with people. Yuri, along with other people, are discussing the future name of the “Like-hell-I’m-dead Battlefield.” After many failed names and a slap in the face, they notice that Otonashi is awake. They continue to try and enlist him, but Otonashi tells them he wants to be erased. Confused as to why he wants to be erased, they tell him the circumstances after being erased. They say that he might be reborn as a barnacle or water flea, similar to the Buddhist belief of reincarnation. After a bit of thought, and constant tries at enlisting, he “joins” the (now named) Afterlife Battlefront in the SSS and he is then introduced to everyone.

Otonashi goes up to the rooftop and watches as students run around the track. Yuri finds him there and starts talking to him. He questions the world and it’s people. Yuri says everyone is just an NPC (non-player character) and they were already there before they came there themselves. She tells him that NPCs and they themselves do not age in the world. They also talk about the existence of “God.”

Back in the room, Yuri starts talking about plans to take meal tickets from the students. He informs Otonashi of the rules while taking part in the plan. If he ever encounters Tenshi he must shoot on sight.

We find Iwasawa setting up her band equipment inside the school while Otonashi is outside of the school guarding. The lights within the school close and reopen to show the band playing. Meanwhile, Otonashi encounters Tenshi outside and points the gun at her. He hesitates to shoot, but he manages to pull it off. Hurt, Tenshi activates her blade arm and goes after Otonashi. Every subsequent bullet he shoots she manages to destroy with a slice.

Backup arrives on the scene and buys time for the rest of the plan to follow through. Back inside fans are set up on the stage. At the climax of the performance, while everybody’s arms are up, the fans activate and blow the meal tickets into the sky.

The last scene shows the team eating at the table and Otonashi states he hasn’t entirely joined the SSS yet.

Phew, a lot of talking in this episode. This is probably going to be the longest post in the series due to the amount of exposition. With that in mind I can’t really rate this episode the same way as other episodes later in the series. I like how they set up everything and gave us some insight to what the world is. I also liked the mix of comedy and the little taste of action the gave us right from the get go. The rock performance scene was really well done and it was really flashy, however it didn’t quite “wow” me the same way the “God knows…” scene did in Haruhi.

Overall though, I liked the episode. Visuals were absolutely stunning and animation was very fluid. I will be continuing this series and I hope it gets better as we go along.

Speaking of Haruhi before, I’m tired of the Haruhi vs. Yuri things. Although they seem (very) similar right now they still have a long way to go before the final episode. It’s extremely similar to K-ON! vs. So-Ra-No-Wo-To. Their similarities almost dropped completely towards the end. You really can’t judge a book by it’s cover.

With a new season comes a new OP. The song is called “Toki Wo Kizuma Uta” by Lia. The animation is reminiscent of the first season, but with new scenes and better animation. The song itself is, in my opinion, much better than “Megumeru” from the first season. It sounds more emotional and delivers a stronger message.

In the illusionary world, the girl who can no longer help build the flying machine wants the robot to stay by her side forever, however the robot knows that he must go outside in order for that to happen. Back in the real world, Nagisa’s pregnancy is progressing through the months, and Sanae and Akio are helping out where they can. Tomoya is filled with doubts. He talks to Sanae and tells her how Nagisa may have had a happier life if he hadn’t met her. Sanae, however, feels that they cannot talk about it. Despite his doubt, Tomoya and Nagisa spend a wonderful Christmas and birthday with the family. Tomoya gets Nagisa another dango and she happily adds it to her collection.

Sunohara, Kyou, Ryou, and Kotomi then visit the couple during New Years, and the group gets caught up on how all their other friends are doing. At one point, Sunohara asks Tomoya what it feels like to become a father, saying that he always felt that becoming a father was something far in the future and similar to a natural disaster. Tomoya doesn’t have an answer about his feelings, but he does know that this happened because he’s with the person he loves and is living for her sake.

The group talks about Tomoya’s and Nagisa’s progress in life and how they are so far ahead. This prompts Kotomi to talk about the hidden world. She tries to explain how their world and the hidden world are deeply connected and have influences on each other, and that leads Nagisa to wonder what the hidden world is like. The talk triggers a memory in Tomoya’s mind about the school play. He has no idea why. In any case, Kotomi also mentions how there might be a number of other worlds, and this reminds Tomoya of how Ryou had once talked about there being many possible futures.

Later that day Akio finds Tomoya watching the construction of the new hospital. He tells Tomoya that he should understand that things constantly change and that’s what it means to live. Tomoya, still in doubt over change, wonders if Nagisa would get better if he were to hinder the construction. He feels that the changes will cause him to hate the city. Akio, feeling that he can’t do anything about it, tells Tomoya that he asked if it was possible for some tree to be preserved.

Snow covers the city on that very same day making it almost impossible to travel by vehicle. This weather causes Nagisa’s fever to build up as well. To add on to the problems she also goes into labor two weeks earlier than expected. Tomoya stays by her side to keep her at ease while they wait for help. Akio, Sanae and Yagi soon arrive to help out the situation. While Yagi controls the birth, Tomoya comforts Nagisa the best he can. Throughout the birthing procedure Nagisa constantly loses consciousness. She wakes up shortly after, only to feel pain. As Tomoya watches he feels helpless and is in despair, but the sounds of a baby crying snaps him out of that state. He scans the room to find everyone trying to contact the hospital. He is given Ushio by Yagi and softly holds her in his arms. As he looks over at Nagisa he finds her barely conscious. Alarmed, he calls out her name until she finally opens her eyes. Nagisa looks at Tomoya as he shows her their newborn baby. She’s very happy she was able to give birth at home and asks if she can rest a bit. As Nagisa starts to drift out of consciousness again Tomoya tries to keep her awake by talking about their future with Ushio and how they’ll raise her. However, Nagisa’s eyes soon close and her hand goes limp. Tomoya desperately calls out her name, but nothing he does can awaken her.

Faced with this, Tomoya remembers all of the time he’s spent with Nagisa, and his memory goes back to when they first met on that spring day. Back then, Nagisa had noted that nothing could stay unchanged, and she had wondered if they could keep loving the school. Tomoya now feels that it would have been better if they had never met and had gone down different paths. He wouldn’t have gone out with Nagisa and married her, and Ushio wouldn’t have been born. If that had happened, then there wouldn’t have been such sadness.

This was quite possibly the best episode in the series so far. The first half of the episode focused on what CLANNAD does best: Slice of life. It was fun watching everyone reunited (minus Tomoyo). There was some talk about the hidden world that interested me as well. But what made the episode stand out among the others is the second half. Everything leading up to the final scene built up so much tension. When the episode finally reached that pivotal scene there was no other choice but to feel all that emotion built up inside. The series itself manage to make me attached to Nagisa as if she was real. When she finally past away I just had to cry.

I do have one complaint though: the ED sequence. You would think that after such a major event such as the death of Nagisa that the animators would put in a special ED. NO! Wrong. Instead, they went for the normal ED and that kind of ended the emotional feeling. In my opinion, that was a horrible choice.

So I’ve decided to start another blog! My other blog can be found here.

I will be following certain anime (and reading manga) during the upcoming seasons. If you are wondering which ones I’m following you can view a list that I’ll put up before the season starts. What I will be trying to do as well is a lineup before each season.
